Fando y Lis (1968)

Alejandro Jodorowsky’s debut feature, Fando y Lis, is a confrontational and uncompromising study of obsessive love and emotional cruelty. The film follows two tormented lovers on a bleak journey toward a mythical destination, their bond marked by anguish, dependency, and volatility. Its shocking, grotesque imagery ignited riots at its 1968 premiere at the Acapulco Film Festival and led to the film’s subsequent ban in Mexico. Adapted from a controversial play by Fernando Arrabal, Fando y Lis reveals the early formation of Jodorowsky’s surreal symbolism and thematic daring, anticipating the spiritual and transgressive cinema that would define his later work. This meticulous restoration, supervised by Jodorowsky and sourced from the original 35mm negative and a duplicate reel, presents the film in its most pristine version to date.
